THE ONES WE CAN STILL SAVE / Ceux que nous pouvons encore sauver

by Nina Frances Burke and Gabriel Hopson

Stacey Evans invited Hopson, an artist in Besançon, and Burke, an artist in Charlottesville, to a collaboration. Each artist sent the other a collection of materials that could fit in Evans’ suitcase. The Ones We Can Still Save is an artistic response to an insulin pen that Hopson included in one of his packages.

“These works are a memorial, a denouncement, a guilty verdict.  We remember ten unlived lives of Americans who died in the last two years.  The life saving medication presented here, imbedded within a sculpture, is unreachable, invisible - a stone - withheld by those who value profit over life.

With these artworks, we remember their names.  We remember them by the last words they posted on Facebook.

Jesimya David Scherer, Jada Renee Louis, Josh Wilkerson, Kayla Davis, Meaghan Carter, Micah Fisher, Jesse Lutgen, Alec Raeshawn Smith, Antavia Lee Worsham, Shane Patrick Boyle.”

Media: Single channel video, insulin pen, carving foam, plaster, tree branches, cotton thread, phosphorescent paint

“ I do hope the people in the USA are one day soon granted the basic right best afforded by a universal healthcare system, including affordable medicines like insulin.  Please, stay aware, and vote."

- Gabriel Hopson
